Sarawak Independence Day, officially known as Sarawak Day, is celebrated on July 22nd every year. It commemorates the day in 1963 when Sarawak was granted self-government by the British Empire, leading to the appointment of its first Chief Minister and the formation of its own cabinet, shortly before joining to form Malaysia.

Traditions & Celebrations

Parades and Rallies: Grand celebrations are held at Padang Merdeka in Kuching, featuring parades by uniformed bodies, cultural groups, and school marching bands.
Cultural Showcases: Extensive performances highlighting the heritage of Sarawak’s 31 ethnic groups are organized to celebrate the state's diversity and unity.
Flag Raising Ceremony: The "Ibu Pertiwiku" (state anthem) is sung as the Sarawak state flag is raised in a solemn ceremony attended by state leaders.
Exhibitions and Concerts: The state government often organizes historical exhibitions to educate the younger generation about Sarawak's journey to independence, followed by evening concerts.
